Ultrasonic and Subsonic Home
Pest Control - Do They Work?
There has been a lot of concern over the use of traditional
home pest control. Many homeowners are now worried that the use
of chemicals to get rid of rodents and insects could harm the
environment. On top of this, they could also endanger humans
and pets. This is why alternative pest management methods and
solutions have been suggested. Two of these are ultrasonic and
subsonic devices.
These devices are often little cordless boxes that can be
plugged directly into electric outlets. Ultrasonic devices emit
high frequency sounds while subsonic devices emit low frequency
sounds. Both sound frequency types are beyond the hearing range
of humans and pets. In other words only rodents and insects are
supposedly able to hear the sounds. These sounds can be so
irritating to them that they either leave the vicinity or
perish.
Some homeowners may appreciate this method because no
chemicals are used. Using the devices also present no danger to
home inhabitants. Moreover, these units last for a very long
time and are therefore quite affordable as home pest control
solutions.
It’s important to note though that there is also a lot of
controversy surrounding the use of these devices. Some critics
go so far as to say that these devices do not work at all.
First of all, they argue that many pests have the same or about
the same range of hearing as many pets and humans. Mice for
example belong to the same family as rodent pets. Hence, if the
devices cannot harm house pets and humans, they are unlikely to
harm pests. Even if the sound frequencies prove irritating
enough, animals and insects are believed to be able to
adapt.
Another point of argument is that sound frequencies can be
blocked. If pests hide behind walls and furniture, which they
frequently do, ultrasonic and subsonic devices may not be able
to penetrate through them.
It is difficult to conclude with finality if these devices
for home pest control are effective or not. It is best however
to simply be aware of the existing issues surrounding it.
Knowing the possible pros and cons of using ultrasonic and
subsonic devices should help you make more informed decisions
about them.
