Four Types of Pest Control Products

At some point, most homeowners have had to think about pest control products. No home can be entirely free of pests. If you don’t want to live with these critters around or if you don’t want your property damaged by them, you need to invest in reliable pest control solutions. There are four general types that are available in the market today.

Chemical Products

The most common are products that contain chemicals. Different brands have different chemical strengths and work on pests in different ways. Many products however either poison pests or attack their nervous systems. There are many products that you can apply on your own. The stronger kinds however are often only available only to professional licensed handlers. Depending on the pest involved, professional grade chemicals may be sprayed, injected directly into the soil or applied on trenches.

Minimal Chemical Content

Some products have minimal chemical contents. Several bait brands for termites for example carry slow acting toxins that kill termites only after they have returned to their colony and passed the toxin to other members. Products like these are often preferred over chemically potent pest control products. They reduce the chances of harming the environment and poisoning pets and humans.

No Chemicals Used

A couple of devices do not use chemicals at all. These include traditional baits such as mouse traps. There are also a couple of electronic or electric devices that either kill or repel insects upon approach. The obvious disadvantage of these devices is that they may not be able to completely eradicate pests.

Natural Substances

Natural solutions have been formulated because of the concern over the harmful effects of chemical products. Some plants such as one species of cedar and the neem tree are known insect repellants. Since not all regions can support the growth of repellent plants, some manufacturers have processed extracts and come up with natural products. These are of course, often milder in strength compared to chemical solutions.

Since there are various types available, not all pest control products are advisable for your particular problem. Before considering any of these types, make sure you have successfully identified your pest problem and its scope.
