Termite Damage - What You
Should Do First
The extent of termite damage can vary. In any case, termites
can and will ruin parts of your property to some extent. What
can you do for your home should you find termites running
around?
Eliminate Termites
Some homeowners think immediately of repairing damaged
sections. Your first priority however is to make sure first
that there are no longer any termites in and around your home.
Eliminating some but not the bulk of the colony would mean they
can come back and feed on your repaired sections again. This
can prove costly to you in terms of both money and energy.
Evaluate the Damage
If you are sure that you no longer have any termites, the
next step is to assess the damage. If the termite infestation
was extensive, you may have to hire a professional engineer to
perform the evaluation for you. An evaluation may cost a lot
but you may have little choice if you had a long term pest
problem. If you were able to detect termites early however
and had them dealt with promptly, you might be able to assess
the damage yourself.
Call for Repair Help
You might be able to repair some forms of termite damage.
This is if only wall panels or minor sections are affected.
Minor structural damage too could be solved by reinforcing
damaged sections. If structural beams and joists are severely
damaged you have to call a contractor to repair your home for
you. This is especially if wires and pipes are near the
sections that need repair.
Regular Inspection
Once your property is repaired, consider conducting regular
termite inspections.
Giving your property a thorough sweep at least once a year can
help you detect or prevent possible termite problems early.
Even if you do not plan to sell your home, early detection is
the best way to ensure that you will have many more years to
enjoy your property.
Termite damage is no laughing matter. Before you even think
about repair work and
costs though, you should think first about termite elimination. Repairing without
successfully destroying the cause of the problem can leave you
with more expenses and work to deal with.
