Saving Your Home Through
Termite Inspection
Some people don’t think they need to get into termite
inspection. In some cases, the idea can only occur to
homeowners when they want to sell their property. Ideally
though, inspection should be conducted at least once a year
even if you don’t plan to sell. Doing so can help detect early
problems and help save your home. If you inspect only when you
feel the need to, you could already have an infestation that is
extremely difficult to deal with.
Some experts don’t agree that self inspection is advisable.
It can however be a good idea if you simply want to confirm
that you do have a termite problem first before contacting
exterminators. This is especially since hiring experts for
inspection can sometimes be expensive.
Before you inspect your property, it’s important to know
where to look. Termites love dark, moist areas with lots of
wood to feed on. You can therefore check around your house
where wood meets soil. Aside from external sections, you also
have to check internal scrawl spaces, the basement and your
attic.
Termite inspection is much like looking for visual signs and
clues. Termites are commonly cream in color. Swarmers have
wings that may differ according to species. Often though, you
will be unable to see wood eating termites in the open because
they will hide from sight and sunlight. As such, looking for
clues may be your only recourse.
There are plenty of visual clues to watch out for. Swarmers
may shed their wings and the wood eaters themselves often leave
tracks of mud and sawdust. If you look closely around your
home, you may also find mud tubes running over wood sections
and soil surfaces. You could also tap on wood surfaces. Those
that sound hollow or give way when prodded may indicate that
termites are feeding inside.
Once you suspect a termite infestation, you may choose to
hire a professional. Some companies charge fees for their
preliminary inspection but others may also offer free services
to confirm your termite inspection. Depending on the size of
your property, an expert can take anywhere between 30 minutes
to an hour to locate the areas where termites feed.
